Mumbai: In a significant breakthrough, a team led by Dr. Ramen Goel, Director of the Diabetes & Metabolic Surgery Department at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, successfully conducted a diabetes surgery on a 41-year-old woman who had been struggling with uncontrolled diabetes for over a decade. The patient, Mrs. Kavita Mahesh, weighed 84.5 kgs and had been battling diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and thyroid issues for ten years. Despite regular medication, her blood sugar levels remained uncontrolled.

Dr. Ramen Goel explained that despite extensive awareness campaigns and lifestyle modifications, a significant portion of diabetes patients fail to achieve proper control over their condition, which significantly increases the risk of complications such as cardiovascular diseases and nerve problems.

The surgery, conducted on February 6th, involved laparoscopic gastrointestinal procedures that reroute the stomach and intestines, aiming to regulate blood sugar levels. The patient was discharged on February 9th, just three days after the surgery. Remarkably, within a week after discharge, Mrs. Mahesh was completely off diabetes medication, and her HbA1c levels had dropped by 10%.

Dr. Goel emphasized that metabolic surgeries, initially intended for weight loss, are now offered to patients with uncontrolled diabetes. These surgeries work by changing gut hormones, and bacteria, and limiting food intake, resulting in improved insulin sensitivity and better glycemic control.

Patients who undergo diabetes surgery often experience glycemic resolution, with blood sugar levels returning to normal, and most no longer require medication. The sustained maintenance of normal blood sugar levels significantly reduces complications associated with diabetes, including eye problems, kidney disease, nerve problems, heart attacks, and death.

Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, has introduced metabolic surgery in North Mumbai, a step beyond traditional weight loss surgeries, aimed at treating diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Pankaj Dhamija, Centre Head at Wockhardt Hospitals, emphasized the hospital's commitment to providing holistic healthcare solutions.

Mrs. Kavita Mahesh expressed gratitude towards Dr. Goel and his team for transforming her life and improving her quality of life. The surgery not only improved her blood sugar levels but also provided newfound freedom and peace of mind, allowing her to enjoy activities that were once lost to chronic fatigue due to uncontrolled diabetes.
