Mumbai: The "Roshni Cataract Services" initiative launched by 'Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre' in Mumbai aims to address the pressing issue of visual impairment among underprivileged individuals by providing free eye check-ups and cataract surgeries. The initiative was inaugurated by the esteemed Founders & Permanent Trustees for Life, Shri Kishor Mehta and Smt. Charu Mehta, along with Permanent Trustee Shri Rajiv Mehta and the board of trustees for Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre.
In India, cataracts remain a leading cause of blindness and vision impairment, affecting millions of lives. Despite effective treatment options such as cataract surgery, various challenges hinder adequate care, including limited access to healthcare facilities, lack of awareness, and financial barriers.
Smt. Charu Mehta highlighted the importance of the initiative, providing essential eye care services without financial burden to those in need. By offering free screenings and surgeries, Lilavati Hospital aims to raise awareness about eye health and ensure that even those facing financial constraints receive quality healthcare.
Shri Rajiv Mehta emphasized the lack of knowledge about regular eye check-ups and financial limitations hindering access to healthcare services. Lilavati Hospital plans to launch healthcare awareness initiatives to enhance access to high-quality healthcare for underserved communities.
Dr. Niraj Uttamani, COO at Lilavati Hospital, emphasized the need for early detection, timely treatment, and increased awareness to combat cataracts' widespread impact. Collaboration among hospitals and stakeholders is crucial to developing strategies focusing on prevention, affordable treatment, and education.
Under the 'Roshni Cataract Services' initiative, approximately 200 patients have been screened, with 29 scheduled for free cataract surgeries. 'Lilavati Hospital' aspires to perform over 500 additional surgeries, reflecting its commitment to restoring sight and hope for individuals in need.
