Mumbai: Diversified Indian conglomerate Essel Group has completed 100 years of its illustrious journey, marking a historic milestone in the country’s corporate and entrepreneurial landscape. From its modest beginnings in 1926 in the small town of Adampur to evolving into a global business conglomerate spanning multiple industries, the Group has built a legacy of innovation, resilience and nation-building.
Founded by the late Shri Ram Gopal Goenka and later expanded by Shri Jagannath Goenka with the support of Nand Kishore Goenka, Essel Group came under the visionary leadership of Dr. Subhash Chandra and his brothers Laxmi Narayan, Jawahar and Ashok Goel. Today, the Group stands among the rare Indian business houses that have successfully carried their legacy into the sixth generation, with the fourth and fifth generations actively involved in business operations.
Over the decades, Essel Group diversified into sectors including packaging, media and entertainment, home entertainment, news broadcasting, infrastructure, real estate, education, technology, lifestyle, amusement parks and content distribution. The Group has impacted billions of lives across more than 190 countries while creating employment opportunities for over 10 million people in India.
The company highlighted that since 1967 it transformed from a traditional commodities trading business into a modern global enterprise with a start-up mindset, continuously reinventing itself across industries. The Group also pioneered several industry-first initiatives in India while maintaining a strong entrepreneurial spirit and focus on profitability.
Speaking on the landmark occasion, Subhash Chandra said, “The journey of Essel Group has been one of perseverance, resilience, innovation, and progress. Our belief that business growth must create value for society and the nation has guided every major step taken by the Group across sectors. This achievement has been built on the vision of generations and the courage to enter uncharted territories.”
Essel Group played a crucial role in shaping India’s business ecosystem during the pre-liberalisation era and later emerged as a key contributor to the country’s economic and social growth. Its initiatives included introducing advanced packaging technologies, transforming India’s fragmented media and entertainment sector into an organised industry, contributing to infrastructure development and promoting education and financial inclusion.
The Group stated that its ventures not only created successful companies but also helped establish entirely new industries in India. Over the last century, Essel Group’s contributions have left a lasting impact on India’s economic, industrial and social development, reinforcing its position as one of the country’s most influential business conglomerates.
