MATEXIL’s Strategic Vision: Shri Piyush Goyal Aims to Double Textile Output to $250 Billion

 

Mumbai: ‘MATEXIL’ has done tremendous work from being a small fledgling to being an exporter to more than 150 countries in the journey of the last 70 years, Said Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles Minister Shri Piyush Goyal. He was speaking at the award distribution programme organized by the 'Manmade and Technical Textiles Export Promotion Council' (MATEXIL)for the year 2022-23.

Shri Rakesh Mehra received a Lifetime Achievement Award 2022-23. Ms Neha Zunzunwala received an award for women entrepreneurs in the textile category. Shri Goyal said on this occasion that “Textile sector has this never say die spirit. From concerns about where there will be any future for it, Textile has emerged stronger even from challenges like COVID-19. Even when we are seeing two wars and rebels troubling sea routes, the textile sector has refused to slow down.”

Minister further said, “The technical sector in India is trying to shape the imagination of the world. 70 percent of the global trade is happening in technical and man-made fiber”.

Shri Goyal appreciated the contribution of private players to the Bharat Tex. He expressed confidence that MATEXIL will help the textile sector in doubling its output to 250 billion dollars.

Minister said that as visioned by the Prime Minister, nowhere else there is this facility of farm to fiber to factory to fashion to foreign except in Bharat Tex. “Everybody should support and value Indian manufacturer, if he gets hurt in the long run industry will suffer massively”.

Minister appreciated the stern step taken by the Prime Minister to walk out of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). He gave the example of the Pharma industry which suffered during covid times due to a lack of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and said India has now focussed on the production of API in India itself.
 
Shri Goyal appealed to industrialists to support local procurement and local value addition. He put forth the idea of companies voluntarily declaring the domestic content in the product, “This will give us an idea about the value chain of the final product”, he added.
 
Expressing disappointment with low expenditure on Research in Development by private companies in the textile sector which makes the government the sole contributor to R&D, the Minister urged the private sector to step up R&D expenditure.
 
The minister also urged the private sector to step up the efforts in skill development and said that the government cannot match the skill development that can be done by the Private sector.

Shri Goyal gave the example of a record speed with which setup was done to start production for Kasturi cotton.
