Mumbai: In a remarkable medical achievement, "Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central", in partnership with the "South Asian Liver Institute", has successfully performed a life-saving liver transplant on Oduetse Setlhare, a 59-year-old diabetic patient from Botswana. Setlhare's medical journey was marked by significant challenges, including as cites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen) and advanced liver damage due to uncontrolled diabetes.
Upon his arrival at Wockhardt Hospitals, Setlhare faced a complicated situation with his liver already beyond repair. Despite initial online consultations led by Prof Dr Tom Cherian, Founder of the South Asian Liver Institute and Head of Liver Transplantation at Wockhardt Hospitals, no non-surgical options were feasible. Consequently, the decision was made to proceed with a liver transplant, necessitating his family's travel to Mumbai.
The transplant surgery, which lasted over 12 hours, was performed by a team of 3-4 surgeons and 1-2 anesthetists. Remarkably, the surgery was completed without any need for blood transfusions, showcasing the high level of expertise and precision involved. Prof Dr Tom Cherian noted that Setlhare's case was particularly challenging due to Portal vein thrombosis, a condition often considered a contraindication for transplantation. However, the surgical team's extensive experience enabled them to manage this complex case effectively.
Prof Dr Cherian highlighted the significance of this case, stating, “Despite the complexity, we successfully navigated the medical challenges and delivered a positive outcome, thanks to our team’s skill and the grace of God. The involvement of a multi-disciplinary team, including Dr. Kedar Toraskar, was instrumental in the patient’s recovery.”
The liver donor was Setlhare's eldest daughter, Joy Setlhare, 39, who endured emotional hardship witnessing her father's decline due to NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis). Joy expressed her feelings, "Seeing my father's mental decline was incredibly tough. He was once so sharp and jovial, and it was heartbreaking to see him lose his personality to the disease".
Dr. Virendra, Centre Head at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central, emphasized the collaborative efforts that led to the successful transplant, noting, “This case underscores our commitment to advanced healthcare solutions and the importance of a dedicated medical team in transforming lives”.
Mr. Somnath Shetty, Head of International Business at Wockhardt Hospitals, added, “We pride ourselves on providing affordable, high-end surgeries for international patients, ensuring transparency and ethics.
