In order to commence the launch of Cyber Security Week, HDFC ERGO invited esteemed speakers to shed light on the increasing number of cybercrimes in India and discuss the on-going challenges faced by individuals. The panelists for the panel discussion were as follows:

The key points discussed at the launch were as follows –
1. In India, there has been a 100% growth in the number of cybercrimes every year
2. Cybercrime can be categorized under two different types:
a. Technical Cyber Crime
b. EconomicCybercrime
3. The different measures undertaken by the police department to tackle cyber-crime are as follows:
a. Technical - Creating Cyber labs in each district
b. Legal - Following the law and the jurisdiction
c. Procedural -
d. Human Resources - Capacity Building
4. The nature of cybercrime has become more sophisticated &now operates as a standalone phishing industry
5. 99% of the cyberattacks donot happen at the code or payment level but happens at the user level. Therefore, Individuals must take onus to protect their own data
6. Individuals are increasingly using smart phones, however they are not equipped to use oneAnything that is uploaded on social media or shared by a smart device can be easily hacked
7. Individuals must not share their passwords/pin with anyone & should upgrade their anti-virus timely
8. According to a report by McAfee and the Center for Strategic and International Studies, 80 billion malicious attempts are carried worldwide every day, out of which 6 billion malicious attempts happen in India
9. Individuals are addicted to social media and constantly feel the urge to post their pictures on social networking websites. Globally, psychologists have recognized this as a growing disease called ‘Selfietitis’ – a psychological disorder in which a person inherently takes pictures of himself
10. Relationships nowadays have become more insecure because of extensive use of gadgets. More than financial loses there are emotional losses seen amongst couples. Parents need to be role models by organizing the usage of social media/smart gadgets amongst children
11. The Internet is unregulated in India and is dealt under IPC (Indian Penal code) & Information Technology Act.
12. There are three types of losses – loss of assets,loss of life & loss of reputation which is covered under IPC
13. The Indian government is positive & helpful to support cybercrimes and complaints can be launched on cybercrime.gov.in
14. There are special cyber cell police stations in Maharashtra where individuals can report cybercrimes
15. Indians have been culturally brought up in a way that they haven’t been taught to say a NO; It is of utmost importance for individuals to self-protect themselves
16. While transacting on ecommerce websites, individuals must not share their data or credit card details on unknown or new websites. Instead, use net banking or payment wallets. Additionally, the credit card used by individuals while shopping online must not have a higher credit limit. For e.g., it is safe to have 5 credit cards with a limit of 2 lakhs, instead of having one credit card with 10 lakhs.
