Mumbai: "Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd.", a global research-led pharmaceutical company, has partnered with "The Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists, and Leprologists" (IADVL) to launch a series of postcards and calendars aimed at raising awareness and showing support for individuals living with 'vitiligo', a skin disorder that affects pigmentation.
In an effort to combat misinformation and promote acceptance, 'Glenmark' and 'IADVL' organized a unique painting competition titled "Empathy in Every Stroke" on 'World Vitiligo Day', June 25, 2024. The competition highlighted the importance of awareness, understanding, and treatment for vitiligo patients. Dermatologists from across India participated, submitting over 150 entries that creatively depicted the journey of patients with vitiligo and advocated for embracing diversity.
The submissions were reviewed by a panel of judges, including Mr. Uday Parkar, a renowned creative maestro and gold medallist from Sir JJ School of Arts, and Ms. Arpa Mukhopadhyay, a famous contemporary Indian artist.
Out of the entries, 22 winning paintings were selected, with 12 featured in the IADVL calendar for 2025 and 10 transformed into captivating postcards. These artistic creations serve as constant reminders of the importance of empathy, acceptance, and respect for those affected by vitiligo.
Alok Malik, President and Business Head, India Formulations, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd., expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “We are proud to support our collaboration again with 'The Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists, and Leprologists' (IADVL) in raising awareness for 'vitiligo'. This initiative reflects our commitment to inclusivity and making a positive impact. Our painting competition inspired over 150 dermatologist entries now featured on postcards and calendars. These cards symbolize our dedication to empathy, acceptance, and respect for those affected by vitiligo. We aim to challenge misconceptions and foster a more inclusive society, making a meaningful difference in the lives of vitiligo patients”.
Dr. Manjunath Shenoy, President of IADVL, emphasized the need for such initiatives, saying, "India has the highest prevalence of vitiligo in the world, and patients often face stigmatization and social isolation. We believe in the power of collective efforts to create awareness and acceptance of the same. These postcards and calendars are small but impactful steps towards supporting vitiligo patients and promoting a more inclusive society".
The launch of these postcards and calendars marks a significant step towards increasing awareness and acceptance of vitiligo, ultimately aiming to reduce the stigma and improve the lives of those affected by this condition.
