Apollo Hospitals Launches "RareCare Clinic" for Comprehensive Rare Cancer Treatment

Mumbai: For patients struggling with the complexities of rare cancers, Apollo Hospitals' newly inaugurated "RareCare Clinic" in Navi Mumbai offers a beacon of hope. This specialized clinic is designed to provide expert, compassionate care tailored to the unique challenges of rare and often misdiagnosed cancers.

Rare cancers, although individually rare with an incidence of about 6 in 100,000, collectively account for a significant 20% of all cancer cases. With over 200 distinct types, these cancers can be particularly daunting due to the scarcity of data and established treatment protocols. The RareCare Clinic addresses this gap by offering targeted care for cancers such as bone and soft tissue sarcomas, skin cancers, neuroendocrine tumors, hereditary cancers, and cancers in sexual minority populations, among others. The clinic also tackles challenging oncology cases, including geriatric cancers with comorbidities and rare presentations of common cancers.

Dr. Jyoti Bajpai, Lead of Medical & Precision Oncology at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, emphasized the critical importance of early diagnosis in rare cancers. "Symptoms of rare cancers can often mimic those of more common conditions, making accurate diagnosis essential for timely and effective treatment", she noted. Dr. Bajpai brings a wealth of experience from global cancer associations, which enhances her ability to diagnose and treat rare cancers accurately.

The 'RareCare Clinic' brings together a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, and genetic counselors, to provide comprehensive care. This collaborative approach ensures that each patient receives a personalized treatment plan tailored to their specific needs.

Beyond medical treatment, the RareCare Clinic is committed to addressing the emotional and psychological needs of patients. "We focus on treating the whole person, not just the disease", Dr. Bajpai added. The clinic offers a range of supportive care services, including pain management, nutritional counseling, psychosocial support, and survivorship programs, ensuring that patients and their families are supported throughout their cancer journey.

Dr. Anil D'Cruz, Director of Oncology and Senior Consultant Head & Neck Oncology at Apollo Hospitals, highlighted the rising global incidence of cancer, with figures increasing from 12 million cases in 2012 to 19.3 million in 2020. "The RareCare Clinic is a testament to our commitment to providing personalized, multidisciplinary care for even the most unique and challenging cancer cases," he said, underscoring Apollo Hospitals' dedication to transforming the cancer care experience.

Mr. Arunesh Punetha, Regional CEO - Western Region, Apollo Hospitals, spoke about the clinic's mission to provide not only advanced treatments but also compassionate care. "We recognize the profound challenges that individuals with rare cancers face, and our dedicated RareCare Clinic is here to walk alongside them every step of the way", he stated. The clinic represents a significant advancement in the fight against rare cancers in India and reflects Apollo Hospitals' unwavering commitment to delivering world-class, empathetic cancer care.
