Indian Workers Lead in Hybrid Work Satisfaction, According to Unispace Study

National: “Unispace”, a global leader in workplace creation, has released its report titled "From Restrictions to Resilience", highlighting the evolving dynamics of hybrid work in India. The report reveals that 97% of employees and 98% of employers in India expressed satisfaction with their hybrid working arrangements, surpassing global averages of 87% and 95%, respectively. This represents a notable shift from previous data, with 31% of Indian employees willing to accept a pay cut to work from home, nearly double the global average of 16%.

Based on surveys conducted with 10,700 employees and employers across 13 countries, including 500 employees and 250 employers in India, the report provides valuable insights into creating resilient workplaces. It shows that employees worldwide are now spending an average of 3.7 days per week in the office, an increase from 3.4 days the previous year.

Swatasiddha Majumdar, Principal of Strategy at Unispace India, notes that while employees are returning to the office, they desire environments that foster innovation and productivity. “Given the longer commutes and childcare arrangements, workplaces must inspire ideas and creativity,” he emphasizes. This year, employees are particularly seeking spaces that facilitate focused work, rather than solely relying on remote work for concentration.

Key Findings from the Report:

  • Office Utilization: Although face-to-face collaboration is a primary reason for office attendance, employees spend 64% of their office time at their desks. Notably, Indian employees spend only 50% of their time at desks while in the office.
  • Challenges: Indian employees face productivity challenges due to noise, temperature, and air quality issues, along with limited opportunities for exercise during the workday.
  • Recommendations: The report suggests a mix of furniture and configurations that cater to diverse tasks and work styles. This includes creating quiet areas for focused work and flexible spaces for collaboration.
  • Innovation Confidence Decline: There is a decline in employers' confidence regarding their workplace's ability to foster innovation, dropping from 96% in 2023 to 85% in 2024.
  • Motivators for Office Attendance: Key motivators for Indian employees to work from the office include subsidized travel, access to training programs, and complimentary snacks and beverages. Additionally, technology infrastructure and wellness areas are crucial for improving the in-office experience.

Other Insights:

  • Workplace Technology: 87% of employers and 80% of employees agree that workplace technology adequately supports their tasks.
  • Commute Preferences: 91% of employees prefer a shorter commute, while 94% would appreciate free snacks and drinks.
  • Flexible Hours: Only 48% of Indian employers currently offer flexible start times, indicating an opportunity for enhanced employee engagement strategies.

Methodology: The research, conducted in partnership with Opinium Research from May 11 to May 23, 2024, surveyed a balanced representation of 8,000 employees and 2,700 business leaders from companies with 50 or more employees across 13 countries, ensuring geographic and demographic representation.
