Mumbai: The “Glue Board Manufacturers Association” (GBMA), a coalition of glue board manufacturers and suppliers, recently held a press conference in Mumbai to address concerns about misinformation surrounding glue boards used for rodent control. This conference followed a circular from the ‘Animal Welfare Board of India’ (AWBI), which urged Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories to take action against the use of glue boards. While this communication was not an official ban, 'GBMA' highlighted that some state Animal Husbandry Departments had issued internal advisories that have been misinterpreted as a ban, causing confusion in the market and impacting the livelihoods of traders.
Mukesh Patel, Secretary of GBMA and Managing Director of Arbuda Agrochemicals, expressed concerns about the spread of misinformation, emphasizing that glue boards play a crucial role in public health by controlling disease-carrying rodents. He urged the authorities to work closely with stakeholders to ensure that regulations are based on facts, stressing the need for pest control solutions to safeguard communities.
‘GBMA’ reiterated that glue boards are a reliable and affordable tool for maintaining public health by managing rodent populations, which helps prevent diseases such as leptospirosis and plague. The association argued that there has been no comprehensive research to assess whether rodent control alternatives are equally effective and humane. Moreover, ‘GBMA’ stated that its members have not been given a platform to share their perspectives, which they believe is contrary to principles of fair governance.
The association appealed for dialogue with regulatory bodies to consider the implications of any restrictions on glue boards for industries dependent on them for health and hygiene. 'GBMA' remains committed to the responsible use of glue boards, advocating for safe, effective, and ethical deployment, and called for collaboration with authorities to ensure that decisions are practical and informed by thorough understanding.
