Mumbai: "The Indian Performing Right Society Ltd." (IPRS) and the "Korean Music Copyright Association" (KOMCA) are celebrating the success of "KOLAB", an innovative Indo-Korean Music Collaboration Programme, which culminated in an exclusive listening session on November 13, 2024, in Andheri, Mumbai. The event brought together industry figures and distinguished guests to experience the cross-cultural music created by emerging artists during the 'KOLAB' songwriting camp, held from November 6th to 12th, 2024, at the True School of Music, Vijaybhoomi University, Jamrung.
The audience had the opportunity to listen to songs blending Indian and Korean musical elements, showcasing the creative synergy between artists from both countries. The collaborative spirit of KOLAB allowed these artists to craft songs that fused diverse cultural influences, resulting in music that resonated with global appeal. The event not only celebrated the artists’ work but also provided them with invaluable exposure, marking a significant step toward career growth in the international music scene.
The songwriting camp brought together 19 music creators from India and South Korea, who worked together on songwriting, composition, and production. Guided by prominent music creators Bunty Bains and Mayur Puri—the Creative Directors of the camp—the artists explored each other’s musical traditions and created fresh compositions that embody a unique blend of Indian and Korean sounds.
Mayur Puri, Lyricist, Screenwriter, Film Director, and Board Member at IPRS, shared, "KOLAB has brought young creators from India and Korea into a truly collaborative space, allowing them to express themselves freely and create something genuinely original. This initiative breaks away from commercial constraints, enabling artists to blend their unique styles and cultural roots naturally. The spirit of collaboration has brought the richness of both Indian and Korean music heritage together, and we’re excited about expanding this platform for more cross-cultural partnerships in the future."
Kim Kibeom, Board Member of KOMCA, added, "This camp has transformed the Korean artists, giving them a chance to break away from their usual creative habits and draw inspiration from collaboration with Indian artists. By experiencing India’s diverse music styles, they have expanded their artistic horizons. This exchange will undoubtedly lead to innovative works in the Korean music scene."
Bunty Bains, Lyricist, Composer, Producer, and CEO of Bunty Bains Productions, expressed, "Being part of KOLAB as Creative Director has been incredibly rewarding. The artists embraced each other’s cultural influences, crafting music that beautifully blends Indian and Korean legacies. The freedom to create without boundaries has led to exceptional compositions that merge tradition with contemporary sounds."
Rakesh Nigam, CEO of IPRS, shared his thoughts, "Genuine, impactful music is born in an environment where artists feel free to experiment without the pressure of producing hits. This collaborative spirit has allowed the artists to produce truly inspiring songs. I am filled with optimism and gratitude for what we have accomplished and look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for emerging artists to shine on the global stage."
The 'KOLAB' listening session in Mumbai not only marked the end of this remarkable collaboration but also laid the foundation for future artistic partnerships between India and South Korea. With IPRS and KOMCA leading the way in fostering meaningful cultural exchanges, 'KOLAB' has opened doors for emerging artists to gain recognition and build international connections, further enhancing the global music landscape.
