Abu Dhabi: At an age when most teenagers are beginning university life, 18-year-old Emirati mountaineer Fatima Al Awadhi is chasing one of the world's toughest adventure challenges. Already recognised as the youngest Arab to summit Mount Vinson and Carstensz Pyramid, and the youngest Emirati to conquer Mount Elbrus, Fatima has officially begun her mission to complete the Seven Summits and ultimately achieve the prestigious Explorer's Grand Slam.
Her latest expedition will see her attempt Lenin Peak (7,134 metres) in Kyrgyzstan's Pamir Mountains, marking the next milestone in a remarkable mountaineering journey.
The Explorer's Grand Slam is considered one of the ultimate endurance achievements, requiring climbers to scale the highest mountain on each of the seven continents and ski the final degree to both the North and South Poles.
For Fatima, however, the challenge is about much more than records. Her passion for mountaineering was born during one of the most difficult phases of her life. While her father was in a coma, she joined the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award programme to cope with grief. A trek through Nepal's Kathmandu Valley transformed her outlook, inspiring her to pursue mountaineering and setting herself the ambitious target of completing the Seven Summits before the age of 20.
Her achievements have been extraordinary in a short span. After climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, she went on to summit Mount Elbrus, becoming the youngest Emirati to do so, before successfully conquering Vinson Massif in Antarctica and Carstensz Pyramid in Oceania.
The ongoing Lenin Peak expedition is being undertaken under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.
Despite spending months training, planning expeditions and travelling across continents, Fatima continues to pursue a full-time degree in Economics, balancing rigorous academic commitments with high-altitude mountaineering.
Her progress has been rapid. She undertook her first serious mountaineering expedition on a 5,000-metre peak in July 2025. Just one year later, she is attempting a challenging 7,134-metre summit after already completing four major international climbs.
Looking ahead, Fatima hopes to break regional records by summiting Mount Everest and Lhotse in a double ascent within 24 hours, bringing her closer to completing the Seven Summits and the Explorer's Grand Slam.
Expressing gratitude for the support she has received, Fatima said, "I am deeply grateful for the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Our father, Sheikh Mohamed, is my role model, and to me, he is the highest summit among all the other peaks. His patronage reflects the vision of a leader who invests in and empowers the nation's youth."
She added that her journey is intended to inspire others to overcome adversity. "My journey goes beyond summits and records. A story does not end with the person who tells it; it creates movement in those who hear it. I hope my story encourages others to step outside their comfort zones, embrace challenges they never thought possible, and believe that no matter how difficult life becomes, we all can rise, rebuild and shape a different future."
Fatima Al Awadhi's determination, resilience and rapid rise in the world of mountaineering have made her one of the UAE's most promising young adventurers, carrying the country's aspirations to some of the world's highest peaks.
