India’s Tourism Boom Drives Demand for Skilled Professionals; LPU Focuses on Industry-Ready Education

National: India's travel and tourism industry is witnessing unprecedented growth, emerging as one of the country's key contributors to economic development and employment generation. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Economic Impact Research 2025, the sector contributed nearly ₹21.15 lakh crore (US$252.9 billion) to the Indian economy in 2024, accounting for 6.6 per cent of the country's GDP while supporting approximately 46.5 million jobs.

With increasing demand across leisure travel, business tourism, wellness, heritage tourism and aviation, the need for skilled professionals has grown significantly. Responding to this industry transformation, Lovely Professional University (LPU) has strengthened its tourism, aviation and hospitality education through industry-focused programmes that combine academic learning with practical exposure.

The university offers specialised programmes including BBA Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management, B.Sc. Airlines, Tourism and Hospitality, BBA Airlines and Airport Management, B.Sc. Culinary Arts, and Bachelor's in Hotel Management and Catering Technology. These programmes are designed to equip students with the skills required to meet the evolving demands of the global travel and hospitality industry.

As the tourism ecosystem expands, career opportunities have diversified beyond conventional hospitality roles. Graduates today can pursue careers with airlines, airports, tourism boards, cruise operators, destination management companies, luxury hotels, travel technology firms, event management companies and wellness tourism organisations.

LPU's curriculum places strong emphasis on experiential learning. Students gain practical exposure through aviation simulation laboratories, food production and front office labs, industrial visits, live industry projects and masterclasses conducted by hospitality and tourism professionals.

One of the university's distinctive initiatives is its Uni Hotel, an on-campus operational hotel where students manage real hospitality operations while serving actual guests. The hands-on learning model allows students to develop practical managerial and customer service skills before entering the industry.

The university also offers international learning opportunities through Semester Exchange Programmes, International Credit Transfer initiatives and collaborations with over 550 universities across more than 80 countries, enabling students to gain global academic and cultural exposure.

Technology forms a key component of LPU's tourism and hospitality education. Students receive training on AI-enabled learning platforms, aviation simulation systems, Global Distribution Systems (GDS) including Amadeus and Galileo, hotel property management software OPERA, smart tourism technologies and digital customer experience platforms, preparing them for technology-driven workplaces.

LPU's industry partnerships have helped students secure placements with leading organisations such as Air India, IndiGo, Qatar Airways, Swissôtel, Thomas Cook, Thrillophilia, The Oberoi, ITC Hotels, The Leela, Kempinski, P&O Cruises and Cordelia Cruises. According to the university, students have secured salary packages of up to ₹37 lakh per annum, while international internships have offered monthly stipends of up to ₹3.4 lakh.

The university also promotes its "Earn Your Fee Back" philosophy, enabling students to gain professional work experience while pursuing their education, thereby strengthening their employability.

Adding to its academic achievements, LPU's hospitality department earned international recognition by creating 10,829 tri-coloured macarons, securing a Guinness World Record and highlighting students' technical expertise, creativity and teamwork.

As India's tourism industry continues its rapid expansion, institutions that integrate academic excellence with practical learning, digital skills, global exposure and strong industry partnerships are expected to play a vital role in developing the next generation of tourism, aviation and hospitality professionals.
